Iran and Oman discuss temporary shipping corridor through Strait of Hormuz

Iranian and Omani foreign ministry officials discussed a framework for a temporary transit corridor and a mine-clearing project in the Strait of Hormuz. Oman's foreign minister said the two sides hoped to 'soon announce' the corridor, but Iran's deputy foreign minister said the plan would involve closing the UN-authorized southern shipping route hugging the Omani coast, and Tehran insisted the strait would not fully reopen until the US lifts its naval blockade, drops oil sanctions and unfreezes Iranian assets.

Why this matters. Any Iran-Oman corridor deal would reroute Gulf tanker traffic and determine how much of the blockaded strait reopens, but Tehran's insistence on closing the existing UN-authorized southern route means shippers cannot yet assume normalized transit.
