Iran's IRGC claims strike and destruction of US Saildrone Explorer in Strait of Hormuz

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy announced that its forces targeted and destroyed a U.S. Saildrone Explorer unmanned surface vessel (hull number 5838) at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media and military officials stated that the unmanned vessel was on a hostile reconnaissance mission in Iranian-monitored waters and broadcast footage showing the craft burning. The U.S. military has not officially confirmed the loss of the vessel.

Why this matters. Direct IRGC targeting of U.S. unmanned reconnaissance vessels in the Strait of Hormuz escalates the threat to international commercial shipping and increases the risk of U.S. naval retaliation against Iranian coastal installations.
