Service member killed in Iraq; U.S. war dead reach 17

CENTCOM said a U.S. service member was killed in northern Iraq during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone; a second service member was wounded. Combined with the Jordan deaths, the U.S. has now lost 17 service members since the war began February 28.

Why this matters. A running, publicly counted U.S. death toll turns the war into a domestic political liability with its own escalating metric, independent of any ceasefire or diplomatic track.
