Former army chief and defence minister Benny Gantz announced that his Blue and White party would not contest Israel’s October 27 election. Polls had consistently placed the party below the 3.25 percent threshold needed to enter the Knesset.
Why it matters
The withdrawal removes a former war-cabinet member from the contest and gives his supporters a choice among other parties before the parliamentary vote.
