US strikes IRGC air defense, radar and mine-laying sites across southern Iran

CENTCOM said US forces began striking IRGC targets at noon ET on Sept. 1, hitting air defense sites, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities and communications sites after attempted IRGC attacks on shipping and US troops. Iranian media reported explosions in Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island, Sirik, Jask, Konarak and Chabahar and near Ahvaz, where officials said seven people were killed at three sites.

Why it matters

It was the heaviest US-Iran exchange in more than a month and targeted the radars Iran uses to spot ships, directly contesting Tehran's ability to police the Strait of Hormuz.
