French UNIFIL peacekeeper killed in south Lebanon ambush; Macron blames Hezbollah

Staff Sgt. Florian Montorio was killed and three other French peacekeepers wounded when a UNIFIL unit came under small-arms fire near Ghandouriyeh on Saturday morning. Macron said “everything suggests” Hezbollah was responsible and the UN secretary-general said an initial UNIFIL assessment pointed to Hezbollah; the group denied involvement. A second wounded soldier, Cpl. Anicet Girardin, died on April 22.

Why it matters

The deadliest attack on UNIFIL during the war came two days into the Lebanon truce and put European pressure on Beirut to rein in Hezbollah.
