Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told the Senate Appropriations Committee the war with Iran has cost $37.5 billion, including expected costs such as troop pay through the end of the fiscal year, up from $29 billion in May. He and Gen. Dan Caine were defending the administration's request for supplemental war funding, and Hegseth acknowledged some Iranian missiles had survived because they are buried underground.
Why it matters
Two Democratic sources and a third person familiar with the matter told CBS the real cost is far higher because the estimate leaves out items such as rebuilding damaged U.S. bases.
