Fighting that began Sept. 3, when Houthi forces launched a ground assault with rocket and drone attacks near Red Sea coastal areas and around Taiz, killed at least 81 fighters, including 24 government troops on the coast, 15 in the Taiz area and 42 Houthis, AFP reported citing military and medical sources. The Houthis sought to cut the road linking Taiz to the port of Mokha.

Why it matters

Al Jazeera's Sanaa correspondent said taking Mokha would give the Iran-backed Houthis a foothold on the Red Sea, a key route for oil exports.
