IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva warned at a joint event with the World Bank in Thailand that Houthi strikes on Saudi infrastructure could affect the global economy. She said the near closure of Hormuz and disruptions in the Red Sea had sharply curtailed oil and gas exports, while damage to energy facilities had reduced production capacity. She also said Saudi Arabia remained resilient because of its economic diversification.
Why it matters
Reduced energy exports and damaged production capacity could push energy prices higher, increasing costs for fuel importers and businesses.
