Iran exempts Iraq from Hormuz restrictions; Iraqi crude tanker crosses next day

Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya joint command said Iraq would be exempt from transit restrictions in the strait, which spokesman Ebrahim Zolfaghari said "only apply to enemy countries." On Sunday the Panama-flagged Ocean Thunder, carrying about 1 million barrels of Basrah crude, sailed through, and Iraq's foreign minister thanked Iran's ambassador.

Why it matters

Iraq relies on oil for almost 90% of its budget and exports most of it through Hormuz, and the exemption showed Tehran granting passage to friendly states while restricting others.
