Iraq says it is seeking a US exemption to restore some Iranian flights

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi's office said Baghdad is in direct talks with Washington to exempt some Iraqi airports from the sanctions on Iranian airlines, so flights can resume for medical treatment, study, pilgrimages and other civilian needs, after all four Iraqi airports serving Iranian carriers halted them.

Why it matters

Iraq is caught between Washington and Tehran: Ali Akbar Velayati, an adviser to Iran's supreme leader, accused al-Zaidi of dividing the "unity of the fronts" over the Najaf halt, and protesters rallied in Basra against the restrictions.
