Israel said an airstrike in the port city of Bandar Abbas killed Revolutionary Guard Navy commander Alireza Tangsiri, whom Defense Minister Israel Katz called directly responsible for mining and blocking the Strait of Hormuz, along with the navy's intelligence chief Behnam Rezaei and other senior commanders. The Guard confirmed on March 30 that Tangsiri had died of his injuries.

Why it matters

Tangsiri ran the Guard's day-to-day control of Hormuz shipping; the Guard's statement confirming his death said 'every fighter is a Tangsiri', so the test is whether the strait's vetting and toll system holds without him.
