Israel launches ground operation against Hezbollah strongholds in south Lebanon

The IDF said troops had begun 'limited and targeted' ground operations against key Hezbollah strongholds to build a forward defense zone; the Times of Israel said the 91st, 146th and 36th divisions were involved. Defense Minister Israel Katz said hundreds of thousands of displaced residents would not return south of the Litani until northern Israel was safe.

Why it matters

Army chief Eyal Zamir approved plans the same day to deepen the operation, and Germany's Friedrich Merz warned that a wider ground war could spur an exodus of refugees.
