Polling opened in Israel’s first parliamentary election since the October 7, 2023 attacks. Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking to retain power, with former military chief Gadi Eisenkot the leading opposition contender. The Guardian reports that polling suggests neither Netanyahu’s coalition nor the opposition bloc will secure the 61 seats needed to form a government.
Why it matters
The vote determines which parties can assemble a government and direct Israel’s military and diplomatic policy toward Iran, Lebanon and Gaza; an inconclusive result could require prolonged coalition negotiations.
