An explosive device killed Maj. Harel Birenstock and Sgt. Maj. Tamir Vaknin and seriously wounded four soldiers in Majdal Zoun, the first Israeli deaths since the truce began nearly two months earlier. Israel called it a 'blatant violation of the ceasefire,' ordered residents of Mansouri to leave and struck southern Lebanon, and U.S.-mediated Israel-Lebanon talks in Rome ended three hours early.
Why it matters
The talks resumed the next day and the State Department called them productive on expanding the pilot zones, but Israel said it will leave only if Hezbollah disarms.
