Israel says it will not withdraw from south Lebanon despite the U.S.-Iran deal

Defence Minister Israel Katz said Israel would not withdraw from territory it had seized in Lebanon and would retaliate if Iran attacked it over events there, and Israel said it would also stay in areas of Gaza and Syria. Netanyahu said Israel would 'remain in the security zones no matter what it takes'.

Why it matters

Iran's security council had said the deal ended the war 'on all fronts, including Lebanon', and the fighting there led to the first round of talks being called off four days later.
