Israeli strikes on Beirut and south Lebanon kill at least 31 after Hezbollah fire

Israel launched waves of strikes on Beirut's southern suburbs and southern Lebanon and told residents of nearly 50 villages to evacuate, as its military chief warned that "any enemy that threatens our security will pay a heavy price." Lebanon's Health Ministry said at least 31 people were killed and 149 wounded, about two-thirds of them in the south.

Why it matters

It was Israel's deadliest bombardment of Lebanon in more than a year and sent thousands of families fleeing to shelters in Beirut, reopening the Lebanon front alongside the war on Iran.
