Netanyahu and Defence Minister Katz said the military struck Hezbollah 'headquarters' in Beirut's southern suburbs in response to the group's fire on Israel. Lebanon's National News Agency said two apartments were hit in the Mreijeh area, killing two people and wounding 11; the number of wounded later rose to 20, including four children.

Why it matters

Iran had said an attack on Beirut would violate its ceasefire with the U.S., and it fired missiles at northern Israel that evening.
