Oman opens an IMO-backed Hormuz transit corridor, and the IRGC warns ships off it

Oman's Maritime Security Centre said it was providing a temporary transit corridor through the strait in coordination with the International Maritime Organization, in line with toll-free navigation, as a UN plan to evacuate about 11,000 stranded seafarers began. The IRGC Navy said only Iran-designated routes were authorised and that ships using the new lane would be in danger.

Why it matters

It split the strait's two coastal states: Oman backed the toll-free passage sought by Washington and the Gulf, while Iran insisted traffic run on its routes under its authority.
