Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in New York for the UN General Assembly despite hardline calls to cancel the trip. Yahya Rahim Safavi, military adviser to the supreme leader and a former IRGC chief, said that if the leader had left the government open to negotiations, "that is a very important act of prudence."
Why it matters
Backing from a senior security figure gave the New York contacts political cover at home, though Safavi insisted Iran's positions on Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb be respected and the Kayhan newspaper urged Pezeshkian to use the UN as "a courtroom for American crimes."
