President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud told Al Jazeera that Israel plans to establish a naval base in Berbera and use the city's airport. He said Somalia would not accept an Israeli presence; Israel had not publicly responded in the report.
Why it matters
Berbera sits on the Gulf of Aden near the Bab al-Mandeb shipping corridor. An Israeli military presence there could become a new point of contention around Red Sea maritime access and Houthi attacks on Israel-linked shipping.
