Before a Medal of Honor ceremony at the White House, Trump said the U.S. had projected four to five weeks but had the capability "to go far longer," and listed four aims: destroying Iran's missiles, wiping out its navy, preventing a nuclear weapon and stopping Iran from arming forces abroad. He called the strikes "our last, best chance."

Why it matters

It was Trump's clearest statement of war aims, and he told the New York Post he did not rule out U.S. ground troops if they were necessary.
