Trump told Fox News by phone on Monday, "We're going to hit them hard. There will be a response," saying all but one Iranian missile was intercepted and the last was let through because it would not hit anything significant. Later in the Oval Office he called the fighting "very limited" but added, "That doesn't mean we won't smack them."
Why it matters
The threat opened the way to a new round of US strikes after a month-long pause; it came the same day Trump declared Iran a "failed nation" on Truth Social.
