In a press statement (SC/16458), Security Council members condemned in the strongest terms continued Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including attacks on civilian and energy infrastructure, affirmed the kingdom's right to self-defence and demanded that the Houthis immediately halt their escalation. They cited at least 125,000 people displaced across Yemen since the start of September.
Why it matters
The Houthis' naval blockade of Saudi Arabia and attacks along Yemen's Red Sea coast threaten the Saudi export route that bypasses Hormuz, adding a second chokepoint to the energy squeeze.
