Two U.S. destroyers transit Strait of Hormuz to begin mine clearing; Iran denies passage

U.S. Central Command said the destroyers USS Frank E. Peterson and USS Michael Murphy transited the Strait of Hormuz and operated in the Gulf as it began setting conditions to clear mines it said the IRGC had laid, with underwater drones to follow. Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya headquarters “strongly” denied the transit, and the IRGC Navy warned it would deal “severely” with any military vessel.

Why it matters

It was the first U.S. warship movement through the strait during the ceasefire and set up a direct contest with Iran over who controls passage.
