U.S. officials told CBS News that current intelligence assessments show at least a dozen Iranian-made Maham 3 and Maham 7 limpet mines in the strait, though another official put the count at fewer than a dozen. Earlier Monday, Iran's National Defense Council warned it would lay mines across all access routes in the Persian Gulf if Iran's coasts or islands were attacked.

Why it matters

Mines would keep the strait dangerous after any ceasefire, and officials had told CBS that allies such as Britain and Japan might send mine-detection equipment only after hostilities end.
