Yemeni military sources said government forces advanced against Houthi positions around the Bab al-Mandab Strait but had not secured the waterway. A Houthi political-bureau member said its forces repelled the advance from the Ras al-Ara area in Lahj governorate.
Why it matters
Control of Bab al-Mandab would affect access between the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, a route receiving added traffic as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is disrupted.
