U.S. officials said part of the Army's 82nd Airborne Division, including a battalion of the 1st Brigade Combat Team and division commander Maj. Gen. Brandon Tegtmeier with his staff, would deploy in the coming days; AP's sources put the force at about 1,000 troops and a CBS source at fewer than 1,500.

Why it matters

Unlike the Marines already heading to the region, 82nd Airborne soldiers are trained to parachute in to seize territory and airfields, adding a ground option as Trump spoke of winding down the war.
