EU agrees to widen Iran sanctions to those blocking navigation in the Strait of Hormuz

EU foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg reached political agreement to extend the bloc’s Iran sanctions regime to those responsible for breaches of freedom of navigation, foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said, adding that transit through Hormuz “must remain free of charge” and asking ministers to bolster the EU’s naval mission in the region.
Why it matters
It was the first EU sanctions step aimed at Iran’s Hormuz tolls and closures, aligning Brussels with pressure for free passage.
