EU sanctions the IRGC Navy's Hormozgan command in its first freedom-of-navigation listing

The EU added the IRGC Navy's Hormozgan Provincial Command to its sanctions list, along with IRGC Navy deputy commander for political affairs Mohammad Akbarzadeh and Hamid Hosseini of Iran's oil, gas and petrochemical exporters' union, for restricting shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said it was the first use of the bloc's new freedom-of-navigation sanctions regime.

Why it matters

It marked the EU's first sanctions aimed specifically at Iran's control of Hormuz traffic, as Iran's ambassador to Moscow said the strait would reopen under new conditions set by Iran and Oman, including a transit fee.
