Houthis declare a maritime embargo on Saudi Arabia, vow to close Bab el-Mandeb to its ships

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree declared a 'maritime embargo against the criminal Saudi enemy' effective immediately, after the two sides traded fire the previous week, including a strike on Sanaa airport the Houthis blamed on Riyadh. A Houthi media official said the Bab el-Mandeb would be closed to Saudi ships, and Saudi Arabia condemned the move.
Why it matters
Saudi Arabia's Red Sea ports have been its main export route around the Strait of Hormuz; by the next day at least five ships, including laden Saudi crude tankers, had turned back before Bab el-Mandeb.
