State media said IRGC commander Maj. Gen. Mohammad Pakpour and Khamenei adviser Ali Shamkhani were killed, and later that armed forces chief of staff Gen. Abdol Rahim Mousavi and Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh died in a strike on a defense council meeting. Israel's military had named Pakpour, Nasirzadeh and Shamkhani among the dead on Saturday evening.
Why it matters
Iran lost its top civilian and military command in one blow; an Israeli military official told AP three strikes hit three locations within a single minute, killing some 40 senior figures.
