Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Thursday that one tanker struck a naval mine south of the Strait of Hormuz. It said another tanker caught fire while exiting the eastern part of the strait, and a tugboat approaching to assist also caught fire. The supplied report does not independently verify the Iranian account.
Why it matters
The reported mine strike and fire aboard an assisting tugboat create additional hazards for tanker operators choosing transit routes and arranging emergency assistance.
