Kuwait's army said its air defenses were intercepting Iranian missiles and drones early on Sept. 3, and its foreign ministry condemned the dawn attack as a flagrant violation of its sovereignty. Iran's army claimed hits on hangars and communications systems at Ahmad al-Jaber Air Base in Kuwait and on Al Minhad Air Base in the UAE; a US official said no facilities used by US forces were hit.
Why it matters
Kuwait invoked its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, raising the prospect of Gulf host states moving beyond interception.
