Iranian lawmakers push a bill to withdraw from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

Tehran lawmaker Malek Shariati said a priority bill to withdraw Iran from the NPT had been uploaded to parliament's online portal for review, after the national security commission's spokesman said staying in the treaty had brought no benefit. Any such law would also need Guardian Council approval, and parliament has not sat since the war began.

Why it matters

Leaving the NPT would drop the treaty commitment under which Iran accepts IAEA inspections, at a moment when its nuclear sites are under attack and inspectors have limited access.
