Israel tells residents of southern Lebanon to move north of the Zahrani River

Israeli military Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee told Lebanese residents to move north of the Zahrani River, which at its midpoint lies about 56 kilometers from the border, as Israel acted against Hezbollah. Earlier, Defense Minister Israel Katz said he and Netanyahu had ordered the military to prepare to expand operations in Lebanon and warned Israel would "take the territory" if Lebanon's government did not stop Hezbollah.

Why it matters

The order covered a large swath of southern Lebanon at a time when more than 800,000 people in the country were already displaced, and it paired with an explicit threat to seize territory.
