Israel pounds Beirut suburbs after one of Hezbollah's largest barrages; toll tops 600

Israeli jets struck Beirut's southern suburbs on Wednesday evening after Hezbollah fired dozens of rockets at once into northern Israel, one of its largest attacks of the conflict; the Israeli military said about 200 rockets from Lebanon were fired in coordination with Iranian ballistic missiles. Lebanon's Health Ministry said 634 people, including 91 children, had been killed and more than 1,500 wounded since the fighting began.

Why it matters

A coordinated Hezbollah-Iran salvo tied the Lebanon front directly to Iran's campaign, and the next day Israel's defense minister threatened to "take the territory" if Lebanon did not rein in Hezbollah.
