Israeli forces advanced beyond Zawtar al-Sharqiyah and Mayfadoun to the edge of Choukine, which was ordered to evacuate, and pushed north along the ridgeline above Marjayoun and north of Dibbine, in what Al Jazeera described as an attempt to encircle Nabatieh. Lebanon's prime minister accused Israel of a "scorched-earth policy".
Why it matters
The advance threatened to encircle Nabatieh, a major Hezbollah support base, days before political talks in Washington.
