Lebanon says more than 1 million people displaced by Israel-Hezbollah war

The Lebanese government said more than one million people, roughly a fifth of the population, had been driven from the south and Beirut's southern suburbs since fighting resumed on March 2. The Health Ministry put the death toll at 886, including 38 health workers.

Why it matters

The displacement surged as Israel began ground operations and Defense Minister Katz said residents of the south would not return until northern Israel was safe.
