Netanyahu orders the military to widen Israel's invasion of southern Lebanon

Visiting the army's Northern Command, Netanyahu said he had instructed the military to further expand the 'existing security buffer zone' in Lebanon, saying Hezbollah still had residual capability to fire rockets. Lebanon's Health Ministry said more than 1,200 people had been killed and over 3,500 wounded since March 2.

Why it matters

Israeli troops had already reached a tributary of the Litani River, and a formal order to widen the zone points to a deeper and longer occupation of the south.
