Putin met Iran's foreign minister in St Petersburg, praised Iranians for fighting 'for their independence and sovereignty' and said Russia would do everything in the interests of Iran and the region to bring peace as quickly as possible. Putin said he had received a message from Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, the week before.
