South Korea’s defence ministry announced plans to seek parliamentary approval to extend the Cheonghae anti-piracy unit’s operating area to waters near Duqm, Oman, about 650km from the Strait of Hormuz. The proposal also requires presidential and cabinet approval. A ministry official said the mission would be non-combat, independent of allied forces and restricted to open waters south of Oman; patrol aircraft would not monitor Iranian territory or the strait’s interior.
Why it matters
Approval would extend South Korean maritime protection closer to Hormuz without committing the unit to combat or operations inside the strait.
