Strikes hit Assembly of Experts buildings as clerics prepare to pick a new supreme leader

Iran's Fars news agency said U.S. and Israeli jets struck the Assembly of Experts grounds in Tehran and a building in Qom, but said the sites had been evacuated and no one was killed. Israeli military spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin said Israel hit a building in Qom where clerics were expected to meet to choose Khamenei's successor.
Why it matters
The strikes aimed at the succession process itself: the 88-member assembly is the body that must name Iran's next supreme leader.
