President Trump told Axios he has to be involved in appointing Iran's next supreme leader, "like with Delcy [Rodriguez] in Venezuela," and called Mojtaba Khamenei, the late leader's son and the most likely successor, "a lightweight" and "unacceptable to me."
Why it matters
It put Washington openly at odds with the Assembly of Experts, which a member said on state TV was close to naming a successor.
