Israel orders residents of Beirut's southern suburbs to evacuate ahead of strikes

The Israeli army ordered residents of Burj al-Barajneh, Hadath, Haret Hreik and Shiyah in Beirut's southern suburbs, Hezbollah's stronghold, to leave immediately, the first time it called on wide swaths of the capital to evacuate. Roads jammed as residents fled, two hospitals evacuated, and Lebanon's health ministry put the death toll since Monday at 123.

Why it matters

Al Jazeera's correspondent said more than 400,000 people live in the area; Israel struck the suburbs that night, extending the Lebanon campaign from the south into the capital.
