Trump posted that the U.S. was in serious discussions with 'A NEW, AND MORE REASONABLE, REGIME' and that if a deal was not reached shortly and Hormuz was not 'Open for Business', the U.S. would obliterate Iran's power plants, oil wells and Kharg Island, 'and possibly all desalinization plants'. Iran's Foreign Ministry again said no negotiations had taken place, while confirming that intermediaries had delivered U.S. proposals.

Why it matters

Adding water plants to the target list drew warnings from legal experts that such attacks would breach the laws of war, and Iran has threatened to answer strikes on its infrastructure by hitting Gulf facilities such as desalination plants.
