UN Under-Secretary-General Jorge Moreira da Silva said Iran and the United States need to agree within weeks on a UN-backed arrangement to move fertiliser through the Strait of Hormuz. The proposal would create a UN-staffed coordination centre in Oman to register vessels and oversee safe passage.
Why it matters
A deal before planting season would determine whether fertiliser shipments can reach agricultural markets in Asia and Africa in time for crop calendars.
