A U.S. submarine sank the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena with a torpedo in international waters off Galle, Sri Lanka, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said. Sri Lanka's navy said it recovered 87 bodies and rescued 32 of the roughly 180 sailors aboard; the ship was returning from a naval review in India.
Why it matters
The sinking, about 1,000 miles from Iran, carried the war into the Indian Ocean and left neutral Sri Lanka handling its aftermath; Iran's foreign minister said the U.S. would "bitterly regret" it.
