U.S. sends USS Boxer group and thousands more Marines toward the Middle East

U.S. officials said the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer and two other amphibious ships left San Diego for the Middle East with Marines of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, roughly 2,500 by AP's count and about 2,200 by CBS's. It is the second such unit sent since the war began and could take weeks to arrive.
Why it matters
The deployment added forces able to operate ashore even as a White House official said Trump had "no plans" to send troops into Iran while keeping all options, including on Kharg Island, open.
