NATO pulls its advisory mission out of Iraq after Iranian attacks

NATO's top commander, Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, confirmed the last personnel of NATO Mission Iraq left on Friday and that the non-combat mission, launched in 2018 and based mostly around Baghdad, will be run from Naples, Italy. The move followed Iranian attacks on British, French and Italian troops at bases in northern Iraq.

Why it matters

The exit of several hundred alliance advisers shows allies judged Iraq too exposed to Iranian fire to keep training its security ministries on the ground.
